End of Term Wrap Up - Term 2

From the Tumuaki/Principal

Ni hao ma - Kia ora whānau and MBS Community,

As our 11-week term ends, I want to celebrate this week specially as we have shown that we are a connected community that grows empowered and curious life long learners (our school’s vision). Thank you to the staff, parents and tamariki for bringing so much joy and fun to our kura through so many initiatives this week. I truly felt a sense of community connectedness with tikanga Maori, where we have empowered tamariki (students) during cross country and football and also growing curiosity through their scientific learning this term.

Week 11 Term 2 Highlights

Phase 3 Intermediate Science Fair (1st July): Thanks to Mrs Smit, Mrs Laker and the Phase 3 teachers for supporting our outstanding learners! Huge thanks to guest judge Jordi Blasco (Skylabs NZ) for inspiring our curious learners, and to the supportive parents who attended.

1st Place: Neo Brunton | 2nd Place: Matthew Ryan | 3rd Place: Aiden Van Den Berg

Annual Matariki Hāngī (1st July): A beautiful day of unity, starting with a moving dawn hautapu ceremony and ending with delicious kai. Massive thanks to Johanna, Whepiha, Te Rina, Matua Sam, Matua George, Leah, Nic, Anna, Dan, Ryan & Anna, Jack, Abdul, Greayer, Jenna, Marino, our phenomenal hāngī committee, and all our parent volunteers and sponsors who made our Matariki celebration possible! Lastly, a huge thank you to all of our parents and tamariki who bought a hāngī this year—the funds raised will go towards supporting our kapa haka programme.

MBS Cross Country (30th June): Incredible resilience and sportsmanship on display! Special thanks to Mrs Els, Mrs Revie, Mrs Harris and Mrs Randle for their amazing organisation, alongside our marshalls, staff, Te Puru, and Mr Gillard from Brookby School who helped us put on this special event.

With Gratitude

Thank you to our incredible teaching and support staff for helping us create an awesome school, and to our wonderful whānau and tamariki for your constant resilience and aroha for our kura. I do hope they have a well deserved break.

From my whānau to yours - we wish you Mānawatia a Matariki (Happy Māori new year), a safe, restful winter holiday, and we will see you all back in Term 3!

Xie xie - Ngā mihi nui,

Lou Reddy

Maraetai Beach School -Term Update

Kia ora Maraetai Beach School community,

On behalf of the Board, we acknowledge another full and successful term. Students have continued to benefit from high-quality teaching and a wide range of learning opportunities, supported by the ongoing commitment of our staff.

Across the curriculum, students have engaged positively in classroom learning, as well as in STEM, the arts, sport, culture, and camp experiences. These opportunities continue to build confidence, capability, and engagement aligned with our vision of empowered, curious lifelong learners.

Curriculum Implementation and Mid-Year Reporting

Staff continue to make excellent progress in implementing the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum. While many schools are still transitioning to the new requirements, we have introduced a consistent reporting approach from mid-year; providing families with a clear picture of student progress and a meaningful benchmark for end-of-year reporting.

The Board thanks all staff for their professionalism, dedication, and sustained focus on high-quality teaching and learning throughout this significant period of curriculum change.

Intermediate Sports Camp - Camp Adair

Our year 7 - 8 students attended Camp Adair for a week-long, device-free sports and outdoor education programme focused on teamwork, resilience, independence, and character development.

Across the week, students participated in a wide range of sporting events and camp responsibilities, demonstrating strong engagement and maturity. The school achieved outstanding results, placing 2nd equal overall across eight schools. Impressively, all 36 students achieved podium finishes (gold, silver, or bronze).

The Board acknowledges Helen Els for leading the programme, along with staff and parent volunteers for their invaluable support. We also thank Physio Moves for their valued sponsorship which helped enable these enriched learning experiences.

If you’d like to hear more about our sponsorship programme, please go to our sponsors page for further information.

Water Supply Update

The school continues to work through ongoing water supply challenges and remains focused on a long-term solution. A $450,000 upgrade has been approved. While initial works have not fully resolved the issue, further stages are planned. The Ministry of Education is supporting both interim and permanent solutions. The Board will continue to work with them toward a sustainable resolution.

We acknowledge staff for their flexibility and professionalism.

Playgrounds

The Board acknowledges the work of Mr Reddy, Mr Rob, Mr Udy, and other helpers in repairing and reopening our playgrounds safely. We also thank staff for supporting students through this transition.

Student safety remains a priority, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of our community.

The school is seeking sponsorship for the development of a new senior playground and has a formal sponsorship programme available. This will enhance student play, connection, and learning opportunities, while providing sponsor recognition through school communications.

If you would like to help with giving a donation towards our playground upgrade please go to our Kindo app - Community fundraising contribution page or contact Vannessa at accounts@maraetaibeach.school.nz

Mānawatia a Matariki

We acknowledge Matariki as a time of reflection, renewal and future planning. This year’s theme, “Matariki Herenga Waka”, celebrates unity, inclusion, and shared heritage.

Thank you to the whānau who supported the school hāngī and contributed to such a positive and meaningful experience for our students.

On behalf of the Board, thank you to our staff, students, and wider community for a strong and successful term. We wish everyone a safe and restful holiday break.

Ngā mihi nui,

Maraetai Beach School Board
